Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Mayor Skibitsky exhibits his weapon
of choice to combat Mother Nature.
The first snowfall of the year is upon us.  Although this storm may not come close to the magnitude of wintry white Westfield experienced during the 2010-2011 season, it's just enough to test the Town's readiness for such inclement weather.  Luckily, this storm came on the weekend when rush-hour traffic and school schedules are not a concern.

The following is the Town of Westfield's ordinance regarding snow removal:
Sec. 24-5. Removal of snow and ice from sidewalks
The owner or tenant of land abutting or bordering upon the sidewalk and gutters of public streets, avenues, and highways in the town shall remove all snow and ice from any laid sidewalk of any kind in front of such land within twelve hours of daylight after the same shall fall or be formed thereon. Where ice is frozen to the sidewalk it shall be removed or covered with sand or ashes. (1932 Revision, Title 4, ch. 1, § 13; G.O. No. 534; G.O. No. 621.)

With 4 inches of snow, or more, predicted to coat the ground before the snow tapers off early this afternoon, temperatures in the low 50's and rain forecasted for Monday will most likely wash the blanket of white away.  Until then, get out the shovel and do the right thing in the name of safety and neighborly nicety.  Shovel the sidewalk.  Be on the lookout for Councilman Foerst engaging in some recreational tubing.  Takes a lot of hot air to fill er' up. Enjoy!
