The Seedy Side of Westfield DPW Management

Ever wonder why Westfield playing fields are in such horrible shape?

Because the town doesn’t properly maintain its fields by aerating, seeding, and fertilizing.

Pictured above is an aerator attachment that is towed behind a tractor or other tow vehicle that pokes holes in the grass to facilitate the healthy growth of new grass.

Towns often aerate their playing fields in the fall and in the spring before seeding and fertilizing.

This apparatus was purchased during Mayor Andy Skibitsky’s administration but has not been used and sits impotent on the pallet it was delivered on years ago.

During the previous administration, the maintenance of fields disappeared, leading some to believe it was an intentional neglect of playing surfaces to encourage the installation of artificial turf fields around town.

Westfield’s natural playing fields have enjoyed somewhat of a natural regeneration this past Spring when sports activities were shut down due to the coronavirus.

Why did the town purchase equipment it never intended to use and why aren’t Town playing fields maintained by the parks division of the Westfield DPW?

  1. Rehire Driver 1 to take the Tahoe with the stolen pimped out rims and tow this aerator around the fields. Win - Win. Zod gets to play with his old toys and the fields get some maintenance.

  2. Great suggestion however, he’d probably steal the aerator machine to aerate his own lawn and hit a parked vehicle on his way out of the DPW parking lot.
Then he’d have his trusty former Lieutenant, now a sergeant, fabricate a hit and run report.
Then, the trusty sergeant would be demoted to patrolman.

  3. This topic needs more discussion especially as spring draws near and the fields will be much needed. Use the equipment we paid for!
